Tips for Preschool Registration

Don’t miss out on your first choice preschool – plan ahead, be prepared, and enroll your child early to secure a spot for September – by Erin Pepler, Pearson Community Co-Op Nursery School

Believe it or not, it’s time to register your little one for nursery school! Fall may be months away (we’re still waiting for Spring, after all) but in many cases, registration happens early and programs fill up fast. Don’t miss out on your first choice school – plan ahead, be prepared, and enroll your child early to secure a spot for September.

Pearson Community Co-op Nursery School is holding their annual Open House and Registration event on March 7, 2015 from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. – so what do you need to know? Here are our tips for registering your child for preschool, from what to bring to what to know, and more.

1. Do Your Research

Everyone arrives with questions, but it helps to arrive with a basic knowledge of the programs offered (days, times, age requirements, etc), as you’ll need to sign up for a specific class. You can visit the school’s website, call the supervisor, or send an email if you have questions. Or, ask around! Word of mouth is a great way to learn about a preschool from a parent’s perspective.

2. Plan Your Questions

You’ve been thinking about registration, and surely have questions to ask about the school, the program, important dates and more. Do children need to be potty trained? How are allergies handled? What is the child-teacher ratio? Write down your questions – registration gets busy, and it’s easy to get distracted (especially if your toddler is with you – they’ll want to play and explore the classroom). Having a note to refer to will make it easier to get the answers you want on the first go.

3. Know What to Bring

To register your child at Pearson, you’ll need a registration form and $40 to cover your registration fee – that’s it. All other paperwork (medical forms, student information, etc) is given in a take-home package upon registration, and completed at a later date. The registration form can be downloaded on the school’s website (www.pearsonco-op.com) or simply picked up on registration day – whatever you prefer!

4. Arrive on Time – Or Early

If you’re hoping to register for a non-duty spot, or in the limited space RTL program (Ready to Learn), make sure to arrive early as these classes fill up fast. Don’t worry about being at the school before dawn, but aim early rather than later (particularly if your heart is set on a particular program – no one wants to end up on the wait list!).

It may seem miles away, but the start of a new school year is just around the corner. Be ready – mark registration dates on your calendar, follow these tips, and you’re all set! Your little one will be happily settled into nursery school before you know it. Now, in the meantime, it’s back to waiting for Spring…
